The Willimantic Thread Company is also famed in this area for being the first mill that has been built for electric lights.

The economy of Willimantic was driven by the textile industry for decades. Check out the Willimantic Linen Company Textile & History Museum to learn about decades worth of textile industry history. The mill here was purchased in 1898 by the American Thread Company and production expanded, closing eventually in 1985.
