Located in Fairfield County on the Pequonnock River and Long Island Sound, Bridgeport has an estimated population of 144,229, making it the most populous city in the state.
In the early 21st century, the city has worked toward redevelopment of the downtown area and other neighborhood areas. Several rental conversions have been completed include the former Read’s Department Store into artists’ lofts. In 2010, the Bridgeport Housing Authority and a local health center announced plans to build a $20 million medial housing complex.
The city offers many activities for visitors and residents alike, including the Connecticut Beardsley Zoo, Captain’s Cove Seaport, Discovery Museum, Housatonic Museum of Art, the Port Jefferson Ferry, and the Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course. Also available are many parks and recreational centers, including an Adopt a Tree program and swimming lessons.
Bridgeport is composed of about 70 distinct neighborhoods and districts found in five distinct areas including downtown Bridgeport, East Bridgeport/East Side/East End, West Side/West End, South End, and North Bridgeport/North End. Make sure to visit Fayerweather Island and Pleasure Beach during the relaxing, warm weathered months.
